Warner Pacific College Director of Athletics Jamie Joss has announced Chris Thoms as the new head coach of the Knights men's soccer program.
Thoms is a well-known club coach and individual trainer in the Portland area, working with Portland City United and Southside soccer clubs, as well as his own training and consulting business. His playing career spanned international professional opportunities in England, the Netherlands, and Thailand. He also competed domestically with the Cascade Surge.
"We were very fortunate to have many highly qualified applicants interested in our program, however, with any coaching search at Warner Pacific College, we look for more than a coach," Joss said. "Chris really stood out with his unique faith journey, passion for the sport, and commitment to providing opportunities for underserved students. Our mission at Warner Pacific really appealed to him."
"Working with many first generation students from our community, our coaches have a great opportunity to show aspiring student-athletes that earning a higher education degree is achievable," Joss added. "Chris has already demonstrated his willingness to use soccer as a vehicle for influence within the local soccer community."
Coach Thoms is currently a staff coach with Portland Timbers Olympic Development Program, where he has worked with elite level players since 2012. He holds the USSF "B" Coaching License and earned a B.S. in Sociology from Portland State University in 2013. He will initiate spring workouts with the current team and begin recruiting for the 2015 season immediately.
