PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific used stingy defense and two timely goals to defeat Northwest University 2-0 today at Damazo field.
The Basics• Score: Warner Pacific 2, Northwest 0• Records: WPC (3-3, 1-0 CCC), NU (2-4, 0-1 CCC)• Location: Damazo Field, Portland, Ore.• The Short Story: The Knights put forth an improved effort to earn the victory in their opening CCC contest. WP outshot visiting NU 13-8 over the 90 minutes of action. How it Happened• The first period was uneventful, with scoring opportunities few and far between. Warner Pacific had the best chance in the 28th minute, but Cesar Esquivel's header clanged off the crossbar.• The host Knights found a few cracks in the NU defense after halftime, and broke through in the 56th minute. Mario Guizar latched on to a crossing pass from Esquivel and tucked away the shot from 8 yards.• WPC doubled their lead seven minutes later, and this time Esquivel was the goalscorer instead of the helper. Johannes Reiber knifed a through pass into the penalty area, and Esquivel converted from 10 yards away.• Joe White made seven saves in goal for Warner Pacific - his second shutout of the season.• Anton Grokhovskiy and Sergio Zurita-Luna saw their first action of the season for WP.• Esquivel received a red card late in the game for a tackle from behind.
